IT was the ideal pairing of young urban professionals: two careers on Wall Street, a wedding, a slice of cake, a short honeymoon and back to the office grind. He paid the mortgage out of his bank account and she made the auto and Bloomingdale's payments out of hers. Each kept credit cards from the bachelor days.
It was a puzzling declaration with an even more puzzling provenance. The Burger King Corporation, without explanation, took out large advertisements in newspapers all over the country to say that the fast-food company "wishes to go on record as supporting traditional American values on television." The advertisements, which ran Sunday and Monday, grew out of a skirmish between Burger King and a religious group, the Christian Leadership for Responsible Television. Earlier in the year, the group had accused the company of sponsoring television shows that were "against family values" and began a boycott of the chain on Sept. 1.
Stephen Smith, a 22-year-old garbage collector in Utica, Mich., is tired of watching candidates "cutting each other down." He liked Ronald Reagan, but looks at the current crop of politicians and says, "You don't know who to believe." He could try to vote them out, he acknowledges, but: "Who am I voting in? I'm voting another bum in." So Mr. Smith is not voting at all.

After five weeks of wrangling about the future of small farmers, the members of the European Community agreed tonight that reductions in agricultural subsidies should be part of their negotiating position in the current round of worldwide talks aimed at freer trade. Although purposely vague, the European position generally backs what would in effect be a 30 percent cut in both price supports and tariffs on farm imports in the 10-year period under negotiation, which is retroactive to 1986 and extends to 1996.

Daniel Sánchez Ayala is a Spanish professional footballer who last played as a centre-back for Potters Bar Town. His first club was Premier League club Liverpool. He joined Norwich City in 2011, and joined Middlesbrough on loan in October 2013, before joining the club on a permanent deal in January 2014. He joined Blackburn Rovers soon after a few years.

He achieved his commercial breakthrough with his fourth EP, Into the Flame (2011), which peaked at No. 3 on the ARIA Singles Chart, and by April 2012, was certified 6× Platinum by ARIA. His 2011 single "Brother" and his 2013 single "Resolution" both won ARIA Music Awards for Song of the Year. Corby has released three studio albums, Telluric (2016), Rainbow Valley (2018) and Everything's Fine (2023).

Thomas Joseph Clancy was a member of the Irish folk group the Clancy Brothers. He had the most powerful voice of the brothers and had previously been an actor in numerous stage productions, appearing with Orson Welles in King Lear. Mary Therese Winifred Robinson is an Irish politician who served as the president of Ireland from December 1990 to September 1997. She was the country's first female president. Robinson had previously served as a senator in Seanad Éireann from 1969 to 1989, and as a councillor on Dublin Corporation from 1979 to 1983. Although she had been briefly affiliated with the Labour Party during her time as a senator, she became the first independent candidate to win the presidency and the first not to have had the support of Fianna Fáil. Following her time as president, Robinson became the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights from 1997 to 2002.
