USAir to Lay Off 3,585 and Cut 268 Flights
USAir Inc. said yesterday that it would cut 3,585 employees, including 660 pilots, as part of major new reduction in flights to try to survive through the current period of slumping traffic and high fuel costs. The cut, which is about 6 percent of USAir's 50,000 workers, is one of the largest furloughs by a major carrier that has not sought bankruptcy protection.
