One year after the fatal shooting of a black teen-ager by a white police officer unleashed a torrent of emotions in this integrated Bergen County suburb, an uneasy and uncertain attempt at racial healing is under way. Diverse segments of the community, particularly Orthodox Jews and blacks, meet regularly now. Two black and two Hispanic police officers have been hired, bringing to 11 the minority representation in the 88-member Teaneck Police Department. The state, at Teaneck's request, is deep into an examination of the department's operations. And a new African and African-American Studies Center has opened in the high school.

The Intel Corporation and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. reported unexpectedly strong first-quarter results today. They attributed the results to strong demand for microprocessors, the computers-on-a-chip that are the brains of personal computers, as well as some larger machines. "We are delighted with this performance, given the current turbulence in the economy and in our industry," said Andrew S. Grove, Intel's president and chief executive. All Intel products exceeded order and shipment goals, he said.

THERE may never have been a musical that made more people angry before its Broadway debut than "Miss Saigon." Here is a show with something for everyone to resent -- in principle, at least. Its imported stars, the English actor Jonathan Pryce and the Filipino actress Lea Salonga, are playing roles that neglected Asian-American performers feel are rightfully theirs. Its top ticket price of $100 is a new Broadway high, sprung by an English producer, if you please, on a recession-straitened American public. More incendiary still is the musical's content. A loose adaptation of "Madama Butterfly" transplanted to the Vietnam War by French authors, the "Les Miserables" team of Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg, "Miss Saigon" insists on revisiting the most calamitous and morally dubious military adventure in American history and, through an unfortunate accident of timing, arrives in New York even as the jingoistic celebrations of a successful American war are going full blast.

After meeting with European leaders today, President Bush said the United States had reached "total agreement" with them on informal safe havens in northern Iraq where aid would be given to the Kurdish refugees from the Baghdad Government of President Saddam Hussein. The Bush Administration's description of the refugee zone it was trying to establish inside Iraq reflected a compromise intended to sidestep problems of international law and regional sensitivities about the nature and future of the area.

WHAT is a Delacroix exhibition without "Liberty Leading the People" or "Scenes From the Chios Massacres" or "The Barque of Dante"? Those monumental paintings by the man who epitomized French Romantic art hang where they always do, in the Louvre. On view in the Delacroix show that has opened at the Metropolitan Museum of Art are only paintings, drawings and prints from North American collections. And yet, in its way, this is a nearly perfect exhibition. The whole of the artist's career unfolds through works of a more intimate scale, but no less heroic mien, than the gigantic ones that will probably never be allowed to leave Paris.
