In the American League, the Minnesota Twins opened a 3-1 lead by beating the Blue Jays, 9-3, in Toronto. Some copies of SportsSunday were printed before the games ended.

WASHINGTON, Oct. 12 -- Seven months after the end of the war in the Persian Gulf, the United States negotiations with Saudi Arabia over a new security alliance for the vital oil-producing area are deadlocked by a dispute over the future size and strength of the Saudi armed forces, United States and allied officials say. For the first time, the Saudis want to supplement their sophisticated air defense system with an offensive army capable of large-scale, mobile warfare like that demonstrated by allied forces against Iraq earlier this year, those officials say.

AT Krupski's Pumpkin Farm on Route 25 in Peconic, great orange pumpkins circle the property and 11 varieties of brightly colored winter squash are arranged in neat rows. An open-air structure houses fresh vegetables like cabbage, broccoli, radicchio, beets, leeks, potatoes and Indian corn. "We grow just about every conceivable vegetable," said Al Krupski Jr., who with his father works the 70-acre farm established by his great-grandfather.
