School Boards Face Hostility As Teachers Seek Raises
GREGORY RYAN stood before the Deer Park School Board and pleaded with the board to negotiate a wage freeze with the 268 teachers in the district, who were seeking a 6.9 percent increase, because the recession had bled residents dry. "The ship is going down, and where are our teachers?" he asked. "They're ringing for cabin service, ordering caviar and champagne."
