RESIDENTS of Garden City, the Town of Hempstead and the Village of Hempstead are angry over a report that cancer-causing contaminants have been found in their drinking water for 12 years. Federal, state and local officials say that the residents have not interpreted the report correctly and that the water is, and has been, safe.
"It's quite a corporate roster we have," said Mayor Mark A. Lauretti of Shelton, Conn. Most recently, Pitney Bowes decided to build a new center for its shipping and weighing division on a 22-acre site where research and development operations are already based. Carm Adimando, vice president and treasurer of Pitney Bowes, said the company hoped to break ground for the 234,000-square-foot building next month.
