MARTIN KARP is baffled. He doesn't know if his co-op was a victim in the wide-ranging scandal involving scores of apartment managers and superintendents, who allegedly received millions of dollars in kickbacks and bribes from vendors. His 258-unit co-op, at 250 East 87th Street in Manhattan, has used the Charles H. Greenthal Company as a managing agent for the last two years; the firm has employed two agents who have been indicted; neither, though, worked for his building.

MARTY CONLON and Eric Mobley came home last week, when both players suited up for the Milwaukee Bucks team that competed in the Doral Arrowwood New York Summer League at the Westchester County Center here. The two 6-foot-11 centers were born in the Bronx and graduated from Roman Catholic high schools in Westchester. Conlon grew up in Bronxville and starred for Archbishop Stepinac High School here, graduating in 1986. Mobley was a standout at Salesian High School in New Rochelle, where he was a 1989 graduate. Both played at Big East universities, Conlon at Providence, Mobley at Pittsburgh.

ON a recent muggy, hazy and very hot Saturday morning, Richard Shanahan, a stockbroker wearing a red and white STOP WAL-MART T-shirt, was standing with several people at a table in a Branford shopping center. Big red and white STOP WAL-MART signs blazed behind them. Passers-by stopped in the hot sun to listen, sign a petition, pick up a STOP WAL-MART bumper sticker and sometimes dropped a dollar in a fishbowl to support future efforts. Some wanted to argue: "You against competition?" asked Arnie Orff, a retiree who has lived 44 years in Branford.
