The former chief financial officer of Empire Blue Cross and Blue Shield was indicted yesterday by a Federal grand jury on charges that he lied to a Senate subcommittee and obstructed its investigation of financial irregularities at the company, the nation's largest medical insurer. The financial officer, Jerry Weissman, was dismissed last year after disclosures that Empire kept two sets of books and had filed false financial data with state regulators. The false data exaggerated Empire's losses on its policies with high-risk customers, including older and sicker New Yorkers who, the company argued, posed a special burden.
Rain, relentless rain, punctuated by thunder and lightning, pounded southeast Texas for a fourth straight day today and showed no signs of letting up. The rain and flooding have killed at least eight people, with several more feared dead. Hundreds of others are stranded in desperate situations as waters rise around their homes, and at least 10,000 people have been forced into shelters in roughly a 50-mile radius around Houston.
Vendors displaced by the Giuliani administration's crackdown on illegal peddling in Harlem joined forces with the Nation of Islam yesterday and began picketing stores along 125th Street, calling on shoppers to boycott businesses not owned by black merchants. The call for the boycott came one day after hundreds of police officers swept the vendors off the busy street where they have proliferated in recent years, angering local store owners.
Several of the nation's largest banking companies, including No. 1-ranked Citicorp, reported stronger-than-expected third-quarter financial results yesterday, bolstered by growing credit demand, fewer bad loans and rising trading revenues. "It's turning out to be a surprisingly good quarter for the major banks," said James McDermott, president of Keefe, Bruyette & Woods, a brokerage firm specializing in banks. "All the big banks are exceeding or at least meeting expectations" for earnings.

On July 1, 2017, he signed a two-year entry-level contract with the Kings as an unrestricted free agent.
