The Raytheon Company wants cheaper electricity and has threatened to go outside Massachusetts to get it. A medical laboratory that performs 70 million clinical tests a year agreed yesterday to pay $8.6 million to the Federal Government to settle allegations that it submitted false claims to Medicare and other government programs for tests that were never performed. MetPath Inc. -- which is in the process of changing its name to Corning Clinical Laboratories Inc. -- does not acknowledge any wrongdoing in the settlement, saying a billing error was to blame for the mistakes.
In a decision that could end nearly two years of detention for some of the passengers of the Golden Venture immigrant smuggling ship, a Federal judge in Pennsylvania ruled yesterday that the immigrants have been wrongfully held by the Immigration Service since their arrival off the coast of Queens and should be released on bond. The ruling poses a potential threat to the Clinton Administration's tough strategy of holding smuggled Chinese immigrants in jail until their cases are resolved as a way of deterring others from coming to this country.
THE first couple of times the headmistress dialed, the conference call did not go through. So the five students from the Spence School in Manhattan rushed off to a room with a better telephone and told their commencement speaker what they wanted to hear on graduation day. The speaker, the writer Peggy Orenstein, took careful notes. "There were some things that they said that really caught my ear," she said later. "They talked about the idea of wanting to give something back. We've gotten into selfish times, and that kind of social responsibility is important."

1995Elisha Cook, Jr., American actor (born 1903)[†]
Elisha Vanslyck Cook Jr. was an American character actor famed for his work in film noir. According to Bill Georgaris of They Shoot Pictures, Don't They, Cook appeared in 21 films noir, more than any other actor or actress. He played cheerful, brainy collegiates until he was cast against type as the bug-eyed baby-faced killer Wilmer Cook in the 1941 version of The Maltese Falcon. He went on to play deceptively mild-mannered villains. Cook's acting career spanned more than 60 years, with roles in productions including The Big Sleep, Shane, The Killing, House on Haunted Hill and Rosemary's Baby.

Alexander Borisovich Godunov was a Russian-American ballet dancer and film actor. A member of the Bolshoi Ballet, he became the troupe's Premier danseur. In 1979, he defected to the United States. While continuing to dance, he also began working as a supporting actor in Hollywood films. He had prominent roles in films such as Witness (1985) and Die Hard (1988).
