People who watched Pope John Paul II's arrival at Newark International Airport may have been disappointed when the Pontiff did not kneel to kiss the New Jersey ground. After all, the now-familiar gesture, which the Pope has performed in countries around the world, has come to symbolize his efforts to bring the church to the people. But there was no papal snub of the Garden State. Msgr. Francis J. Maniscalco of the United States Catholic Conference said the Pope only kisses the ground of countries he is visiting for the first time. John Paul II did it in Boston in 1979, on his first American visit.

Simpson murder trial emerged today to give insight into their celebrated verdicts. "It wasn't a matter of sympathy, and it wasn't a matter of favoritism," said Brenda Moran, a 45-year-old computer technician. "It was a matter of evidence."
