Women who consume excessive amounts of vitamin A during the early months of pregnancy can cause serious birth defects in their unborn children, a large new study has shown. The babies of women who consumed more than 10,000 international units of vitamin A daily -- nearly four times the recommended amount -- from supplements or food or both were more likely to be born with malformations of the head, heart, brain and spinal cord.

Addressing a city that he said many looked up to as "the zenith of civilization and progress," Pope John Paul II called on New York yesterday to pay more attention to hardship and poverty in its midst. "Have the people living in this huge metropolis lost sight of the blessings which belong to the poor in spirit?" the Pope said in his homily at a morning Mass under a brilliant blue sky at Aqueduct Race Track.

With a hard-won blessing from Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani, the New York City Board of Education decided yesterday evening to offer the job of schools chancellor to Dr. Rudolph F. Crew, the Superintendent of Schools in Tacoma, Wash., even though he has not said publicly whether he would accept. The board president, Carol A. Gresser, said in a statement that the board had reached consensus on Dr. Crew, 44, who oversees a system of 31,500 students -- roughly the size of the largest of New York's 32 community school districts. Mrs. Gresser then scheduled a formal vote for 7 tonight, when the long and tortured search for the next leader of the country's largest school system is expected to draw to a close.
