U.P.S. Strike Is Disruptive, But Vital Goods Arrive A strike by 185,000 members of the teamsters' union idled most of the trucks of the United Parcel Service, slowing the movement of millions of packages and inconveniencing businesses and their customers. The most essential goods -- food for grocery stores, medicine and medical supplies for hospitals -- appeared to be getting to their destinations. But the walkout came at a bad time for the book publishing industry, because this is the week that most trade publishers start shipping major titles for fall. $(Page A14.$)
