Stocks Slump, Ending Worst Month Since October Stocks retreated from early gains to end lower, hurt by weakness in computing issues and growing concern that political and economic turmoil in Asia could damage United States corporate profits. The Dow Jones industrial average fell for a fifth time in six sessions, losing 70.25 points, or eight-tenths of 1 percent, to 8,899.95, its first close below 8,900 since April 28. Broader gauges also fell.
