DNA Test Finds Evidence Of Jefferson Child by Slave

By Dinitia Smith and Nicholas Wade

DNA tests on male descendants in Thomas Jefferson's family and that of Sally Hemings offer genetic evidence that Jefferson fathered slave's youngest son, Eston; report in journal Nature is based on blood samples collected by Eugene A Foster, who analyzed Y chromosomes and found rare mutation in Jefferson line; samples are from descendants of Jefferson's uncle Field Jefferson, Hemings' sons Eston and Thomas Woodson and Jefferson's sister's sons, Carr brothers, who were rumored at time to have fathered Hemings' children; samples were analyzed by Christopher Tyler-Smith at Oxford; Carr chromosomes are different from Jeffersonian line, but Y chromosome of John Jefferson, believed to be Eston descendant, has rare Jefferson mutation; 52-year-old Pennsylvania man and his sister, Julia Jefferson Westerinen, 64, say they already knew of connection; photo; Woodson chromosomes are completely different, refuting his family's oral tradition of Jefferson paternity; Jefferson scholar Joseph Ellis says report changes his opinion; Hemings herself was half-sister of Jefferson's wife Martha Wayles, from John Wayles' relationship with Betty Hemings; she was said to be 'mighty near white...very handsome'; Jefferson's grandson Thomas Jefferson Randolph described her as 'light colored and decidedly good looking,' and also reportd that Thomas Woodson 'might have been mistaken for Mr Jefferson' at a distance; Woodson's paternity is mystery (M)

The New Church Social

By Monique P. Yazigi

Bible-oriented Jewish and Christian social groups across New York City have become popular singles scenes, in late-century reinvention of traditional church social; individuals in 20's and 30's are meeting for discussions of ethical issues and Bible stories, sometimes with covert intention of finding mate; religious leaders say groups for young singles have grown significantly in past two years, while attendance at retirees and parents' groups is flat; photos (M)
