COMPUTER TROUBLE LOOMS FOR STATES IN 2000, U.S. FINDS

Most states are behind schedule in renovating their computers for year 2000, making it likely that benefit payments will be delayed or services interrupted for people who receive various types of public assistance; state employees are drafting contingency plans in case their computers are not ready by Jan 1, 2000; some states are lagging, and computers that have been repaired for one program still have not been fixed for social welfare programs; survey by General Accounting Office found that only one-third of 421 computer systems used for seven major health, welfare and nutrition programs are ready for year 2000; health and welfare officials in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut say meeting deadline should not be problem, but in Alabama, less than 10 percent of work needed to fix computers has been done (M)

Barbara Jean Acklin was an American soul singer and songwriter, who was most successful in the 1960s and 1970s. Her biggest hit as a singer was "Love Makes a Woman" (1968). As a songwriter, she is best known for co-writing the multi-million-selling "Have You Seen Her" (1971) with Eugene Record, lead singer of the Chi-Lites.
