In a matchup of two struggling clubs, only one looked like a team in turmoil tonight. The Rangers may wish they had the Devils' in-house problems right now. Hours after their president and general manager, Neil Smith, plucked the veteran defenseman Rich Pilon from the Islanders off the waiver wire, the Rangers were thoroughly outplayed by the Devils at Continental Arena in a 3-2 loss.

At the burial service in a small chapel Tuesday morning, there had been a poignant moment when a great-granddaughter of Dorothy Fassel played a favorite hymn of her great-grandmother's on the flute. Eulogies from grandchildren, children, friends and in-laws followed until finally, Jim Fassel, the Giants' coach and the middle child and only son of Dorothy and Bud Fassel, rose to speak. He told a funny story about his mother, which brought the release of laughter for an emotional congregation. And then Fassel closed the service by speaking movingly of his mother, who died last week, and his father, who died in an automobile accident seven years ago.
