In a strategy meant to demonstrate that he has nothing to hide, Senator John McCain has released hundreds of letters he wrote to regulators as chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee, some of them benefiting contributors to his Republican presidential campaign.
The New York City Board of Education defied Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani yesterday by rejecting his candidate for interim schools chancellor and choosing Harold O. Levy, a banking executive and member of the State Board of Regents, for the job. Mr. Levy's appointment is not yet assured, because he lacks formal credentials as a school administrator and must receive a waiver from Richard P. Mills, the state education commissioner. The board voted, 4 to 3, yesterday to request the waiver, and Mr. Mills said through a spokesman that he would decide quickly.
Gateway Plans to Use Chips From Advanced Micro Again The computer maker Gateway, which has attributed an earnings shortfall to chip supply problems caused by Intel, plans to announce today that it will again be using microprocessors produced by Intel's archrival, Advanced Micro Devices. Only last year, Gateway switched from buying some chips from Advanced Micro to relying on Intel alone. But last week, the company described Intel's shipments as ''severely constrained, spotty and unreliable.'' Executives said that the company would not remain so dependent on a sole supplier. I.B.M., the standard-bearer of mainstream corporate computing, plans to announce today that it is placing a big bet on Linux, a symbol of software's counterculture, as the operating system of the future for the Internet. The Linux campaign at the International Business Machines Corporation will include substantial financial investment, an aggressive marketing campaign and a reorganization. A high-profile I.B.M. executive, Irving Wladawsky-Berger, former general manager of the Internet division, is being placed in charge of the company's software development for Linux, a version of the Unix operating system available free on the Internet.

Crossair Flight 498 was a scheduled commuter flight from Zurich, Switzerland, to Dresden, Germany. On 10 January 2000, the Saab 340B operating the flight crashed two minutes after takeoff in the Swiss municipality of Niederhasli, killing all 10 passengers and crew. It was one of two fatal crashes for Crossair during its existence; the other was Crossair Flight 3597 which crashed less than two years later during approach to Zurich.
