Now that scientists have effectively determined the complete sequence of human DNA, research teams are gearing up for a follow-up project that many say will be as ambitious and difficult, but also full of promise for medical research; new endeavor focuses on proteins, which are substances made by body in response to instructions provided by the genes and which actually form the body and carry out its functions; Human Genome Project has led to discovery of genetic coding for production of tens of thousands of proteins, but functions of these genes and and their proteins remain largely unknown; new effort, known as structural genomics, will focus on shape of proteins, which interact with other molecules based on their three-dimensional configuration, like keys fitting into locks; graph illustrates protein analysis (M)
