Expect more quick forays into Afghanistan by American special forces. That was the message from Pentagon officials after the assault Friday night by more than 100 Army Rangers and other elite forces, the first major ground operation in the war against Osama bin Laden's terrorist network and its Taliban protectors. RISK IS CERTAIN -- Mindful of the Soviet Union's sorry experience in Afghanistan, a decade of quagmire and the loss of 15,000 troops, American officials said they planned to rely on lightning raids by commando teams, operations expected to be short but intense. The aim, they said, is to surprise and outpace the enemy. But that also involves close combat and inevitable risk. American casualties are more than likely, it was suggested.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Edith Berkowitz and three children, Dr. Murray R. Berkowitz and his wife D'Ann L. Swan-Berkowitz of Crofton, MD, Deborah M. Berkowitz and her husband George Moskowitz of Port Washington, NY, and Lewis A. Berkowitz, Esq., of Tulsa, OK. He is also survived by his sister Jeanette Gebrowitz and six grandchildren, Aaron Berkowitz, Sarah Berkowitz, Rachel Berkowitz, Samantha Moskowitz, Jason Swan and Kyle Swan. His son George from a previous marriage predeceased him. Funeral service Sunday, 11 AM, Levayah-Garlick Funeral Home, 1091 Yonkers Ave, Yonkers, NY. Interment King Solomon Cemetery, Clifton, NJ. In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Cancer Society in his name.
