Avery Lawrence Schreiber was an American actor and comedian. He was a veteran of stage, television, and movies who came to prominence in the 1960s in a comedy duo with Jack Burns. He acted in an array of roles mostly on television sitcoms and a series of popular advertisements for Doritos tortilla chips.

In the three weeks since a deadly attack on the Indian Parliament, President Bush and his foreign policy team have scrambled to avoid war in South Asia with a simple formula: in daily phone calls to both sides, they have tried to reframe the conflict as a battle over terrorism, not territory. They have carefully offered no opinion on the question of who should control Kashmir, an emotionally explosive issue in both countries. The rivalry between the PC and TV over which is destined to become the hearth of the home will take on new urgency on Monday when three prominent technology executives sketch out competing visions of their digital product lines. Steve Perlman, a former Apple Computer hardware designer and co-founder of WebTV, will introduce a digital television set-top box as part of an alliance with EchoStar Communications, the satellite broadcaster. The partnership, which is to be announced on the opening day of the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, will be the debut for Moxi Digital, the company Mr. Perlman founded in January 2000. Moxi was until recently named Rearden Steel Technologies.
The gargantuan cleanup is set to be finished by June. The caved-in subway line is slated to be rebuilt and running again by November. The first new office tower could start rising as early as the end of the year. And the PATH commuter line from New Jersey, for which hundreds of millions of dollars have already been made available, is scheduled to be back in service by the end of 2003. It is a pace of progress at the World Trade Center site that was unthinkable right after Sept. 11, and that has surprised everyone from city and state officials to real estate developers to victims' families.
