''It's gone. There's nothing left. Everything we had mostly was in Enron stock.'' Such sorrowful words have lately become all too common on television news reports. But the woman tearfully sharing her anguish on the ''Today'' program yesterday morning was Linda Lay, the wife of Kenneth L. Lay, who resigned last week as chief executive of the Enron Corporation.

THE streetcar named Desire is now a bus. And has been since before Super Bowl IV, the first of what will be Bourbon Street's ninth Super Bowl, the most of any site. But there is still a trolley on St. Charles Street and they're constructing a trolley line on Canal Street that leads to where the Mississippi and the bourbon flow. And if the New England Patriots are in the Super Bowl, it must be New Orleans. The two other times the Patriots earned an invitation to the game that has created a national holiday that should be known as Party Day, they lost -- to the Chicago Bears, 46-10, in Super Bowl XX and to the Green Bay Packers, 35-21, in Super Bowl XXXI.
