Federal regulators filed suit today against Ernst & Young, one of the nation's largest accounting firms, seeking more than $2 billion in damages for what they say was the firm's role in the collapse of a savings and loan last year. Regulators accused Ernst & Young of committing fraud in its audit of Superior Bank, which regulators seized last year in one of the largest banking failures in a decade, by misrepresenting the bank's poor finances and hiding its mounting problems.

Tenet Healthcare, reeling from concerns about special Medicare reimbursements paid to its hospitals and a raid by federal agents of one of its facilities in California, outlined steps yesterday that it said it was taking to try to reassure investors. In a conference call that lasted more than two hours yesterday afternoon, Tenet's management promised to review dozens of cases by two doctors who are being investigated on accusations that they performed unnecessary surgeries. They also vowed to make more information available about the Medicare reimbursements in question.

Judge Backs Settlement In Microsoft Antitrust Case A federal judge approved Microsoft's antitrust settlement with the Justice Department and rejected virtually all of the stiffer sanctions sought by a coalition of state attorneys general. The ruling brought at least a temporary close to the landmark case filed nearly five years ago. Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly of Federal District Court in Washington did impose some new obligations on Microsoft that were not included in the settlement last November, requiring the company to disclose more information to competitors about its Windows operating system and to set up a compliance committee of corporate board members.
