But some retailers are playing to one of the season's guilty pleasures: shoppers indulging themselves. This early in the holiday season, the retailers say, most of the shoppers are women, and the new advertising campaigns are aimed at persuading them to take a break from shopping for others.

Jean Parker

2005Jean Parker, American actress (born 1915)[†]

Jean Parker was an American film and stage actress. A native of Montana, indigent during the Great Depression, she was adopted by a family in Pasadena, California, at age ten. She initially aspired to be an illustrator and artist, but was discovered at age 16 by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer executive Louis B. Mayer after a photograph of her was published in a Los Angeles newspaper when she won a poster contest.

2005John Sentamu becomes the first black archbishop in the Church of England with his enthronement as the 97th Archbishop of York.[†]

John Tucker Mugabi Sentamu, Baron Sentamu, is a retired Anglican bishop and life peer. He was Archbishop of York and Primate of England from 2005 to 2020. In retirement he was subject to investigation over his handling of child sexual abuse allegations and was asked to step back from ministry because of his mishandling of deviant clergy.
