Valentín, 38, sustained a season-ending broken leg July 20 in Los Angeles, less than two weeks after he returned from a two-and-a-half-month absence because of a partial tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.The Mets and Aaron Heilman avoided salary arbitration by agreeing on a one-year deal worth $1.2 million. The team exchanged contract figures with the five remaining arbitration-eligible players — Endy Chávez, Ryan Church, Pedro Feliciano, Oliver Pérez and Jorge Sosa — and are still negotiating. Sosa and Pérez have requested a 2008 salary that is more than $1 million higher than what the Mets offered. Sosa asked for $2.75 million, and the Mets submitted $1.7 million; Perez asked for $6.5 million, and the Mets offered $4.725 million.
