The drummer Jimmy Chamberlain has left Smashing Pumpkins, according to a brief note on the band’s Web site, smashingpumpkins.com. Mr. Chamberlain was an original member of the group, started by the guitarist and singer-songwriter Billy Corgan in 1988. Mr. Corgan “will continue to write and record as Smashing Pumpkins with plans to head into the studio this spring,” the message read. Mr. Chamberlain was the only original member of the band — which broke up in 2000 and reformed in 2006 — to play on the recent 20th anniversary tour. ... Guns N’ Roses has a new guitarist (again). The band has announced that Dj Ashba, a guitarist and songwriter whose credits include being a co-writer and co-producer on Mötley Crüe’s latest album, “Saints of Los Angeles,” has replaced Robin Finck.

Smashing Pumpkins Lose a Drummer

Students from the University of California, Berkeley, won four awards and the University of California, Los Angeles, grabbed three at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Foundation’s 30th College Television Awards, held at the Culver Studios in Los Angeles on Saturday night. Tom Bergeron of “Dancing With the Stars” was the host, and the presenters included Masi Oka (“Heroes”) and Jim Parsons (“The Big Bang Theory”). The awards recognize excellence in undergraduate and graduate student video, digital and film production in a variety of categories including animation, children’s, documentary and drama. The foundation received a record 712 submissions from 214 schools in 42 states, almost double the number of entries a year ago.

College Filmmakers Are Honored

Egypt is expected to make an official request to the United States this week for the return of a Pharoanic coffin smuggled out of the country 125 years ago, The Associated Press reported. The wooden coffin, right, is more than 3,000 years old and belonged to Pharaoh Ames of the 21st Dynasty, which ruled from 1081 B.C. to 931 B.C., said Zahi Hawass, the secretary general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities of Egypt. The ornately decorated coffin was seized by customs officials in Miami last month, when an American, who bought it from a dealer in Spain, was unable to provide sufficient paperwork to prove ownership. The council has sent documents to authorities in Miami proving that the coffin was taken out of Egypt illegally in 1884.

Egypt Requests Coffin’s Return

The Screen Actors Guild and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers remain in a tense deadlock over a new contract for the actors, but another group, the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, has approved its new agreement. The 35,000 members of 15 Hollywood locals, made up of film and television production workers, have ratified a three-year contract that will go into effect on Aug. 1. The contract includes some small pay increases but also cuts in health and pension benefits, The Associated Press reported. Though some union members mounted an opposition, accusing union leaders of selling them short, the majority argued that the contract was the best they could expect in a dismal economy; the 15 locals, which represent carpenters, electricians, prop makers and other skilled technicians, unanimously endorsed the contract.

Hollywood Technicians Sign Contract

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, currently on a 50th anniversary tour that was scheduled to end in May, has added performances at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, June 9 to 14. The company will present two programs on alternate dates: “Best of” will feature selections from the troupe’s repertory, including a new production of the artistic director Judith Jamison’s “Hymn,” a tribute to Ailey that includes several company dances along with narrative recollections from current and former dancers in a text conceived, written and narrated by Anna Deavere Smith. The second program, “Classic Ailey,” includes his 1958 ballet “Blues Suite” and a one-act version of “Anniversary Highlights,” made up of excerpts from many of Ailey’s dances.
