An article last Sunday about a vast expansion of the collection of DNA by law enforcement officials misstated the expected rate of the increase of growth in the F.B.I.’s DNA database. The increase to 1.2 million new entries by 2012 from 80,000 would be a 15-fold increase, not a 17-fold increase. And an accompanying map showing states that require DNA samples from all convicted felons omitted one state. Pennsylvania also requires the samples.

Correction

An article last Sunday about a measure that would soften a smoking ban in Nevada erroneously included a city among ones that have repealed smoking bans. Urbana, Ill., has not done so.

An article last Sunday about offices at 1 Police Plaza known as “The Shack,” where reporters work, attributed an erroneous distinction to a reporter who once headed a news bureau there. The reporter, Mary Ann Giordano, was the first female police bureau chief for The Daily News, starting in 1985; she was not the first female police bureau chief in the city. At least one other woman, Jennifer Preston, was a police bureau chief before Ms. Giordano, having started at “The Shack” in 1984 for New York Newsday. (Both women now work for The Times.)
