SHORT HILLS, N.J., Sept. 18. -- In one of the greatest upsets ever known in the realm of sports, Bobby Jones, holder of the American and British open golf championships and acknowledged the greatest golfer of the present era, went down to defeat in the final of the national amateur event here today at the hands of George Von Elm, a player who twice previously had been beaten by Jones in national amateur play.
