AL ASHBY'S new film, “The Last Detail,” adapted by Robert Towne from Darryl Ponicsan's novel, is about the final, desperate spree that two aging career sailors force upon the 18‐year‐old apprentice seaman they're escorting from Norfolk, Va., to the naval prison in Portsmouth, N.H. The kid, a witless innocent whose only failing is his kleptomania, has been sentenced to eight years in the brig for attempting to steal $40 from the polio contribution box that was the favorite charity of the base commander's wife.
