Senators Hear Sleep‐Aid Drugs Are Ineffective, Possibly a Peril

Monopoly Subcom of Sen Small Business Com hears testimony that over-the-counter drugs used as sleep aids and sedatives are probably ineffective in recommended doses and could be hazardous in larger quantities; Sen Gaylord Nelson, subcom chmn, says indus has had over a dozen yrs to show that drugs were effective but has failed to do so; notes that Kefauver amendments of 1962 require that evidence of effectiveness and safety be provided for all drugs on market; Dr Anthony Kales of Penna State Univ says he studied Sominex and found that normal dosage had no favorable effect whatsoever; indus svy shows that Sominex and Execdrin PM acct for over two-thirds of market; Kales and other witnesses note that although there are many different sleep productes, virtually all contain same basic ingredients; Dr David J Greenblatt of Mass General Hosp says in addition to fact that products are ineffective, excessive quantities can cause serious ill effects; Dr William H Forrest Jr of Stanford Univ School of med says he would not advise removing drugs from market but that consumer should be given more information than was now available on package (L)

Marcos Scutaro, better known as Marco Scutaro, is a Venezuelan former professional baseball infielder. He bats and throws right-handed. Scutaro made his major league debut with the New York Mets in 2002, and subsequently played for the Oakland Athletics, Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox, Colorado Rockies and San Francisco Giants. Scutaro was named the most valuable player of the 2012 National League Championship Series while with the Giants; he and the team then won the 2012 World Series over the Detroit Tigers.

Inex-Adria Aviopromet Flight 450

1975Forty-five people are killed when Inex-Adria Aviopromet Flight 450 crashes into Suchdol, Prague, while on approach to Prague Ruzyně Airport (now Václav Havel Airport Prague) in Czechoslovakia (present-day Czech Republic).[†]

Inex-Adria Aviopromet Flight 450, JP 450, was an international charter flight from Tivat in the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia to Prague, Czechoslovakia which crashed in the Prague suburb of Suchdol on October 30, 1975, at 09:20 AM. The McDonnell Douglas DC-9-32 with 115 passengers and 5 crew on board descended, under Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IMC), below defined Minimum Descent Altitude (MDA) during the final approach to Prague Ruzyně Airport RWY 25, entered a gorge above Vltava river, and was unable to outclimb the rising terrain. 75 of the 120 occupants died during the crash itself while 4 others died later in hospital. The accident remains the worst aviation disaster on the territory of the Czech Republic.
