Agency Votes To Start Talks On Lilco Plan
Determined to cut the highest electric bills in the continental United States, a state agency voted today to begin negotiations to replace the Long Island Lighting Company with a hybrid public-private system. The plan's sponsor, Gov. George E. Pataki, immediately hailed the 13-to-2 vote by the agency, the Long Island Power Authority. "I'm convinced it's for real, and it's going to happen," Mr. Pataki said. "Long Islanders have suffered too long."
