The New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority yesterday hired an Englewood Cliffs company, Kajima International, to develop a $250 million hotel and entertainment complex between Giants Stadium and the Continental Airlines Arena. The complex would be built on a 55-acre site now bisected by Route 120, which would have to be rerouted east of the arena, said Robert Mulcahy, the president of the sports authority.

From his home in Hempstead, L.I., Gary R. Grella frantically works the phone, distributes fliers and otherwise runs his slice of Patrick J. Buchanan's New York campaign with more than a little passion for what he calls "a populist uprising." "You're talking to campaign headquarters right here on the kitchen table," said Mr. Grella, a 48-year-old engineer's aide for the Village of Hempstead.

Standing in the middle of the designer sportswear department at Nordstrom, Lisa Razin ticked off the differences between the department stores in the Southern California bazaar. Bullock's is her place to buy cutting-edge fashion, while Nordstrom is where she goes for cosmetics and party dresses. Robinsons-May has no clear-cut image at all. And then there is Bloomingdale's, which is about to storm into the Southern California market. "I have no clue about it," said Ms. Razin, 30. "I'm a total West Coast person. I am not sure I need another shopping option. But I do know to know that it's cool."

John Cardinal O'Connor, the Roman Catholic Archbishop of New York, yesterday helped arrange for the transfer of a brain-dead infant from a Queens hospital that was unwilling to continue caring for her to a Catholic hospital in Manhattan, which will presumably let her remain on a mechanical ventilator until her heart stops beating. The transfer puts an end, for now, to the legal arguments over the fate of the infant, Mariah Scoon, and means that the Appellate Division of State Supreme Court in Brooklyn will not get a chance to clarify a fuzzy phrase in state regulations that requires hospitals to make "reasonable accommodation" for families who on religious grounds do not accept the medical and legal principal that brain death constitutes death.

A Federal judge extended the probation of Michael R. Milken yesterday while the Securities and Exchange Commission completes an investigation into his recent business dealings, including advice he gave Ted Turner on his company's sale to Time Warner Inc. The request for the extension, which initially lasts 90 days, was agreed upon by the Government and Mr. Milken's lawyers after several days of talks, Judge Kimba M. Wood said yesterday at an afternoon hearing at the Federal District Court in Manhattan.
