Genital Ritual Is Unyielding in Africa
Tradition of female genital cutting remains strong in much of Africa despite rising chorus of international condemnation, but some seeds of change are noted as the debate over the practice slowly moves into public arena; organizations have sprung up to combat the practice, but they are small, ill financed and must struggle within societies where men rule women's lives, and old people, including old women, rule the young; purpose of the cutting, which diminishes a woman's ability to experience sex ual pleasure, is to help insure a woman's fidelity to her husband and her family, and the practice knows no class or religious boundaries; photos; map (M)
